Building on the success of the XXII Triennale di Milano centred around the theme “Broken Nature: Design Takes on human survival”, Triennale Milano organised yesterday the second of a series of three symposia exploring the development of the theme of the 23rd edition of the Triennale di Milano International Exhibition.

Under the title “The Earth seen from the Moon”, the symposium, held in the Triennale Milano with mostly remote participants, provoked lively discussion by taking a decentralised point of view on our planet, and by addressing the unknown aspects of the current challenges facing the world.

The symposium gathered a number of prominent international figures in art, design, culture and science to debate topics such as ‘Stand apart to understand’,‘A new Anthropocene’,‘Fragility as awareness’,‘The legacy of the pandemic’ and ‘A new culture for a new world’. Stefano Boeri, President of Triennale Milano, and Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) both participated in the discussions.

Addressing the role of Expos and of the Triennale in providing a stage for joint action and cooperation, the BIE Secretary General evoked the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the need for cultural institutions to engage and interact with the public on the paramount questions facing humankind.

Yesterday’s symposium was the second of a series of three such workshops. The first took place on 4 March, gathering scientists, curators and scholars of various disciplines, and the third will take place on 11 July, dedicated to the themes of social justice and equal rights. Each workshop is aimed at touching on a range of viewpoints and challenges facing the planet; including but not limited to our relationship with nature and the ecosystem, the fragility of humankind, new forms of ‘togetherness’ and exhibition, and cross-border collaborations.

The outcome of the three symposia, which are livestreamed and can be viewed online, will contribute towards the process of defining the theme and identifying the curator for the XXIII Triennale, set for 2022.
