The design concept of this book is: present a museum condensing the century-old Expo, tell a brief history of the century-old Expo, and review an exhibition of the century-old Expo on paper.
First, the binding and graphic design takes the reference of the appearance of the World Expo Museum (WEM). The concave lines on the book case and cover are taken from the façade of the WEM building, and the copper-brown art paper between the two volumes of the book represents the copper wall of the building.
The two volumes are combined by the cover, and reflect the two-level architecture construction of the WEM permanent exhibition which includes 8 exhibition halls. Among the eight exhibition halls in the permanent exhibition area, Halls from No.1 to No.4 tell the history of the Expo and present its development process, Halls from No.5 to No.7 show the results of Expo 2010 Shanghai to help retain the good memories of 2010, and Hall 8 reflects the situations of Expos after 2010 and keeps up the last developments of the event.
The layout design also emphasizes to the design method of the WEM permanent exhibition. Each exhibition hall starts with a visit flow diagram of the exhibition hall on which the positions of each exhibition area and important exhibits are marked. Text and pictures are arranged and combined in a deliberate grid system, like a group of exhibition items. Every Expo starts with an information data sheet, which is like the text label in exhibition. The navigation arrow, page number and picture number are combined together as a whole navigation system of this book, which adds a sense of movement to the static paper, guiding the reader to deal with the massive information, like walking in the real exhibition halls.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the closing of Expo 2010 Shanghai, the Documentation Research Center of the WEM re-studied the materials and visualized the history of the Expo with a large number of precious documentation and photos. As another form of displaying the permanent exhibition of the WEM and an extension of the permanent exhibition, this book complies with the context of the permanent exhibitions. It combines historical materials with exhibition, makes the Expo correspond to the development of the times, and introduces more than half of the Expos held, hoping to turn the visitors of the WEM into readers of the Expos, and enable them to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Expos through reading.
