The origin of painted enamel can be traced back to Europe. It was introduced to China by European merchants and missionaries at the end of the 17th century. The Chinese referred to it as "foreign porcelain".

Guangzhouas a treatyport in the early Qing Dynasty, it becamethe first to master the production techniques of painted enamel. By integrating it with Chinese traditions, they gradually developed a type of enamel, known as Canton enamel. When Canton enamel was exported to Europe, westerners considered it to have distinct Chinese characteristics and called it "China of all colors".

Despite being the same Canton enamel, it was referred to bytwo different names:"foreign porcelain" and "Chinese enamel". The interaction and dialogue between civilizations commenced. This exhibition, jointly organized by the World Expo Museum and the Art Museum of Chinese University of Hong Kong, aims to showcase the beauty of Canton enamel craftsmanship and its timelesscharm through the integration of Chinese and Western cultures.
