Shanghai is a colorful city in autumn. It is especially lovely on a sunny weekend afternoon.
On the afternoon of November 24 and 25, more than 60 artisans gathered at WEM to paint their impressions of World Expos with enamel glaze.
The experience with cloisonné was co-sponsored by WEM and the Lyu’s Jewelry Art Studio.
Instructor demonstration
The instructor first introduced the origin, history and catetories of enamel decoration, including cloisonne, and then showed the participants some pieces of cloisonné-decorated porcelain, comparing the developments of the decorative technique in China and in the West.
The instructor led the participants through the cloisonné-making process step by step from forming patterns, soldieringmetal strips to filling the spaces with enamel glaze, calling attention to each key point.
Hands-on
The experience taught the participants about the exquisiteness of the craft. It was difficult as it was the first time for every one of them, but they did a good job!
The event also attracted a lot of children who helped their parents complete the craft.
The three-hour session was really intensive:
Lecture about the origin of cloisonné
Forming patterns
Soldering the metal strips
Filling the spaces
Firing
Finished. It is my first cloisonne handwork. It is AMAZING.
