Apart from Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and other related masterpieces well-known to Chinese audiences, some works are exhibited in China for the first time. Seventy percent of the works in the exhibit are large triptych paintings with rich historical background content.

Regardless of the composition of the painter or the content of the paintings, the exhibition has constructed a relatively more complete exhibition system, and this completeness is closer to displaying the true floating world in history. More importantly, the exhibition returns art to the humanities, and explores why Ukiyo-e works, which are citizens' art, will be dubbed the "Encyclopedia of the Edo Period" by later generations.

The exhibition specifically selects works related to Chinese culture. For example, paintings depicting the custom of "five-section sentences" can see many Chinese cultural elements, reflecting the long history of exchanges between China and Japan. A series of activities will be held in the follow-up to the exhibition, and the audience can gain a deeper understanding of the "The Floating World of Lives" world by participating in the activities.

Taking advantage of Japan’s participation in the Paris World Expo in 1867 and the Vienna World Expo in 1873, Ukiyo-e entered the European public’s vision and had a significant impact on the European art world. It also absorbed foreign cultures and enriched the cosmopolitanness of its narrative expression, and played a unique role in the spread and exchange of Eastern and Western cultures and mutual promotion of common prosperity.

  Ukiyoe

Ukiyo-e emerged in the Edo period (1603-1867, also known as the Tokugawa Bakufu period) in Japan. It is a type of art mainly based on prints, and its literal translation is "paintings of the imaginary world". It takes secular life as the main object of expression and reflects the cultural and aesthetic trends of ordinary people. As a popular art in Japan, Ukiyo-e has been widely favored by people from all over the world since the time of European Impressionists such as Monet and Van Gogh.
