2016 THE TRIENNALE DI MILANO

Date:April 2nd – September 12th 2016

2016 : The rebirth of the International Expo on design
The Triennale di Milano is nearly a century old. It is the direct child of the Biennale for decorative arts of Monza created in 1923. In 1933, the Triennale was transferred to Milan with the main objective to stimulate the interaction between industry, production, and applied arts. Since then, the Institution has become a key cultural center that organizes art exhibitions, plays, cinema festivals, conferences, and many other actions linked to the arts. Among its activities, the Triennale organizes the event that bears the same name, the "Triennale di Milano", one of the world's most famous international design exhibitions. Since 1933 this event is held under the auspices of the BIE. However, the last Triennale was held in 1996. 2016 will mark its rebirth, and for the occasion, the institution has a few novelties up its sleeve for a bigger and richer event.

Theme: ?21st century, design after design ?

As a pioneer and forerunner in the promotion of the arts and research on design, the Triennale has chosen a theme that will raise many questions on the meaning of design and its role in a constantly changing world. Through the variety of its participants, the Triennale 2016 hopes to address key issues such as the impact of globalization on the design industry, the meaning of unique pieces vs serial production, craftmanship vs industry, the interaction or opposition between the material and the immaterial, heavy vs light, architecture vs design. According to the President of the Triennale, Mr. Claudio de Albertis: ? XXI Triennale. Design after Design is a highly articulated concept, whose key elements can serve as founding principles for an exhibition flourishing with objects, at the same time enjoyable to the larger public and a source of reflection for experts, under economic, technological, cultural and educational aspects. ?

The location: throughout the entire city of Milan

The 21st edition of the Triennale will allow visitors to experience the event in a new, larger way. While all previous editions of the event took place in the historical building of the Triennale - the Palazzo dell'Arte – the 2016 exhibition will extend to the entire city of Milan through prestigious venues that will serve different aspects of the theme, may it be architecture, design, decorative arts, photography or contemporary art.

The selected locations are the historical Royal Palace of Monza – whose restoration will be completed by 2015- the contemporary arts center Ansaldo Museum of Cultures designed by David Chipperfield, the HangarBicocca dedicated to the production, display and promotion of contemporary art, the youth centre for culture production Fabbrica del Vapore, the 150 year-old Polytechnic School, and the Bovisa Campus that houses Europe's major school of design.

The participants: a wide variety of players

The second novelty compared to previous editions is the nature of the participants. To increase the scope of the event and generate a true variety in terms of exhibits, ideas, innovations and discussion, the Triennale will add to the participation of the member states of the BIE, the participation of cities, regions, universities, firms, design centers, art associations, museums, non profit entities, young groups of designers and more

more than 100 countries and 6 international organizations
Expected number of participants*:
over 5 million visitors from all over the world

Expo Site :

A land of 25 hectares is planned for allocating the pavilions of Expo 2017. The site is easily accessible from Astana’s city center, the international airport and the railway station. The Expo Site is also linked to a network of Kazakhstan’s inter-city roads to ensure a quick access from the whole country.

Theme :Future Energy

Kazakhstan proposed “Future Energy” as the theme of Expo 2017. Nowadays, the world is facing a shortage of energy and the threat of an environmental crisis. This raises a real challenge in perserving traditional energies and finding alternative energies. As oil production is declining and its value increases gradually, in the near future, an important part of the population will have to shift to alternative energies. The Expo will serve as a platform for exchanging experiences from all over the world in the field of alternative energy, a sector that is growing rapidly.

Objectives:

Being a country that owns a rich reserve of oil, gas and uranium, Kazakhstan seizes its responsibility in preserving traditional energies and promoting alternative energies such as solar, wind, marine resources, ocean and geothermal waters to resolve the problems of energy shortage in the world. The capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, was awarded the “City of Peace” award by the UNESCO. Kazakhstan is the first nation in central Asia to have submitted an application for a specialized international Expo. Expo 2017 Astana is part of Kazakhstan's Green Economy program. "In the new Century of scientific and technological breakthrough, also marked by more and more frequent natural catastrophes, ecological issues and natural resources are part of the global priorities of the international community.” H.E.M. Nurlan DANENOV Ambassador of Kazakhstan in France

2020
DUBAI, FIRST WORLD EXPO IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Date: October 20th 2020 - April 10th 2021

Expected number of visitors:
25 million

The theme: Connecting minds, creating the future

With its theme, the Expo bid fosters both a philosophy of mutual understanding and cooperation and a hands-on approach to figure out the solutions to three tangible sub-themes: mobility, sustainability and opportunity. For Dubai, these three challenges are so interconnected that they have to be addressed simultaneously in order to find truly global answers :

Mobility adresses issues of logistics, smart engineering and energy consumption. Sustainability is about preserving our resources and ensuring everyone has access to them. Opportunity is being able to adapt to an ever-changing world and develop new economic models that take into account cross cultural exchange, the progress in technology and the vital role of sustainable development.

2020 starts now with Expo live

An important part of Dubai's project is the Expo Live program that will find, fund and bring to Dubai innovative projects thanks to a 100 million Euro Expo Partnership Fund. Through seminars, working groups, meetings and workshops, Expo live will connect the innovators of tomorrow with experts and potential partners. Expo Live will start during the preparation phase of the Expo and funded projects will be presented during the Expo in the Innovation Pavilion and Innovation labs.

The Expo reinforces Dubai and the UAE's position as a world hub

Expo 2020 Dubai will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UAE. In only a few decades, Dubai has become one of the world's most modern, innovative and technological cities, attracting investors and workers from over 200 countries. With a target of 25 million visitors, the Expo will continue building Dubai and the UAE's status as a world hub and after the Expo, the site will become the Dubai Trade Center Jebel Ali. The Expo will also be the occasion to show the world that the UAE is shifting from "hard" to "soft" projects, as each subtheme is a pillar of Dubai's development strategy. Projects in all three fields are in motion.

The Expo site : accessibility, innovation and legacy

The site project stems from Expo 2020 Dubai's ambition to create a worldwide discussion platform, a springboard for creativity and a networking space. The Expo will take place on a 438-hectare site on the southwestern edge of Dubai. Equidistant from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the site will be located next to the new Al Maktoum International Airport, which will be able to carry 160 million passengers a year. The site itself will be divided in three areas dedicated to each sub-theme. These thematic zones will lead up to Al Wasl, the main plaza. Countries will be able to set up their pavilion in the area that corresponds best to their development strategy. Sustainability is at the heart of the project. The site is based on modular design. An important part of the Expo will be dismantled and rebuilt to create appropriate infrastructures for the development of the region.
